Awesome Things To Do In Dakar: Best Tourist Spots

Dakar, Senegal’s vibrant capital, offers a dynamic mix of culture, history, and stunning coastal beauty. From bustling markets and lively music to peaceful islands and iconic landmarks, Dakar promises diverse experiences that captivate every traveler. Whether you’re exploring its art scene or relaxing by the Atlantic, the city leaves a lasting impression.

Discover the Soul of History

No visit to Dakar is complete without a boat ride to Gorée Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its haunting role in the transatlantic slave trade. The House of Slaves (Maison des Esclaves) stands as a powerful reminder of the past — a place of reflection and remembrance.

Back on the mainland, the Museum of Black Civilizations and IFAN Museum of African Arts offer immersive journeys through the cultural and intellectual achievements of Africa and its diaspora.

Embrace Art, Culture & Local Life

Dakar is a magnet for artists and creatives. Explore the Village des Arts, where local painters and sculptors open their studios to visitors. At Black Rock Senegal, contemporary art merges with global conversations, thanks to a vibrant residency program started by Kehinde Wiley.

In the Medina, Dakar’s cultural heartbeat, you’ll find colorful murals, lively music, and open-air markets selling everything from fabrics to grilled meat. It’s the perfect place to experience daily life through local eyes.

Soak Up the Sea & Sun

Dakar’s coastal charm is irresistible. Relax on Yoff Beach or Virage Beach, where surfers and locals share space with fishermen and sunbathers. For a more tranquil escape, hop on a boat to Ngor Island, where you can enjoy fresh seafood, go snorkeling, or simply unwind on a hammock under palm trees.

To witness Africa’s westernmost sunset, head to Pointe des Almadies — a rocky outcrop lined with seafood shacks and cafes. Or climb to the top of the African Renaissance Monument, the tallest statue in Africa, for sweeping views over the ocean and city.

Get a Taste of Senegal

Dakar is a culinary haven. Try Thieboudienne, Senegal’s national dish of fish, rice, and vegetables, or explore the smoky world of dibiteries — local grill spots famous for their spiced lamb and beef. At bustling street food stalls and seaside restaurants, flavors are bold, spicy, and unforgettable.

For something sweet, don’t miss thiakry (a millet and yogurt dessert) or a refreshing glass of bissap, a tangy hibiscus drink.

Dive into Local Rhythm

Dakar lives to a beat — whether it’s the call of the djembe or the sounds of mbalax, Senegal’s signature fusion of traditional percussion and Afro-pop. Visit live music venues like Just 4 U, or catch a spontaneous dance performance in the street. The city is also home to Africa’s largest biennial of contemporary art, Dak’Art, which transforms Dakar into an open-air gallery.

Discover Saly: Senegal’s Seaside Escape

Just 80 kilometers south of Dakar lies Saly Portudal, Senegal’s most popular beach resort town along the Petite Côte. With its golden sands, calm turquoise waters, and laid-back charm, Saly is the perfect blend of relaxation, adventure, and local culture.

Spend your days lounging on the beach, jet skiing, or snorkeling. For nature lovers, the nearby Bandia Reserve and La Somone Lagoon offer unforgettable wildlife encounters. Golfers will enjoy the scenic Golf de Saly, while foodies can savor fresh seafood and traditional Senegalese dishes.

With a range of accommodations — from luxury resorts to cozy guesthouses — and a warm, welcoming atmosphere, Saly is the ideal coastal retreat for couples, families, or solo travelers looking to unwind or explore.

Best time to visit? November to April, when the weather is dry and sunny.

Discovering Pink Lake (Lac Rose) – A Surreal Day Trip from Dakar

Lac Rose (Pink Lake), just an hour from Dakar, is one of Senegal’s most surreal natural wonders. Known for its stunning pink hue caused by salt-loving algae, this lake is a must-see on any West Africa itinerary.

During my visit, I floated in the salty waters, watched salt harvesters at work, and rode an ATV across the nearby sand dunes. The lake changes color depending on the sun and season, so go in the morning for the best views!

Whether you’re filming a vlog, taking drone shots, or just enjoying the peaceful vibes — Pink Lake is a unique mix of beauty, culture, and adventure.

If you’re in Dakar, don’t miss it.

Final Thoughts

Dakar is not just a place to see — it’s a place to feel. It’s where history whispers from ancient walls, where the Atlantic waves dance along golden shores, and where every street echoes with music, color, and life. Whether you’re a culture enthusiast, food lover, beachgoer, or curious explorer, Dakar welcomes you with open arms and unforgettable energy

I had the privilege of spending 30 incredible days in Dakar back in 2021, and it was truly a life-enriching experience. From the warm, friendly people to the beautiful weather and the city’s rich cultural heartbeat, Dakar quickly felt like a second home. Whether it was strolling through the vibrant Medina, standing in awe at the towering African Renaissance Monument, or simply savoring freshly grilled seafood by the ocean — every moment was unique, and every memory, lasting.

A special thank you to my Senegalese brother, Osman, whose kindness, support, and generosity made my stay even more meaningful. You showed me the true soul of Dakar, and for that, I’m deeply grateful.

If you’re planning a journey to West Africa, put Dakar at the top of your list. It’s a city that doesn’t just impress — it connects, inspires, and stays with you long after you’ve left.

So go ahead — pack your curiosity and let Dakar surprise you, one unforgettable moment at a time.
